There are amazing phenomena in the world of chemical reactions that work just like the rhythmic process of heartbeat or breathing. This is why these oscillatory chemical reactions occur. The most famous and interesting example is the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction, also called the BZ reaction for short.
The Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction is a complex chemical dance where the color of the mixture changes rhythmically without any external interference—from red to blue and then from blue to red!
How does the BZ reaction work?
This reaction does not proceed in a single direction like any normal reaction. Rather, it is a cyclic process. It involves several chemical steps that react to each other, producing a self-generated oscillation.
- Intermediate steps: During this reaction, some intermediate products are formed and destroyed.
- Color change: These intermediate substances are responsible for the color change of the mixture.
- Rhythmic pattern: This process is repeated continuously, creating a continuous, timed and visually pleasing colour-changing pattern.
A puzzle for scientists
Scientists spent years trying to understand this reaction, as it was completely different from the understanding of conventional chemistry. This reaction is a classic example of the principles of chemical kinetics and disequilibrium thermodynamics, showing that complexity is not limited to living organisms.
Oscillating chemical reactions tell us that chemistry is not just a subject of static equations. It is a dynamic science where rhythms and patterns exist, just like in nature. Phenomena like the BZ reaction are a unique and scientific example of the complexity and beauty hidden in the universe.
