Only a few films have left such a deep mark on the history of Bollywood like the classic ‘Bobby‘. This 1973 Hindi film, which was first released on September 28, did more than launch Dimple Kapadia and Rishi Kapoor into stardom, it also changed the way young people feel about love forever .
A Love Story for the Ages
For its time, “Bobby” was a brilliant new-age love story. The film, which was directed by the legendary Raj Kapoor after his previous unsuccessful attempt “Mera Naam Joker“.

“Bobby” offered a new and open perspective on young people’s romantic relationships. With their electric chemistry, Dimple Kapadia and Rishi Kapoor brought to life a love story that captivated the audience and created a sensation that will last for decades.

There was so much enthusiasm for the film that special “Bobby buses” were arranged to transport enthusiastic fans from small towns and villages to metropolitan theatres. This was a testament to the immense popularity of the film and the influence it had on young actors.

Apart from winning the hearts of the audience, “Bobby” also received praise from critics.
The film won several awards at the 1974 Filmfare Awards, including Best Actor for Rishi Kapoor and Best Actress for Dimple Kapadia. For the film A. Rangraj’s art design and Narendra Chanchal’s heartfelt performance of “Bekash Mandir Masjid” also received Filmfare.
Fashion and Pop Culture Phenomenon
The impact of ‘Bobby’ went beyond the screen. Urban women adopted Dimple Kapadia’s classic polka-dot dress, affectionately known as the “Bobby Dress“, as a fashion statement.
Boys also tried to imitate Rishi Kapoor’s adorable fashion sense, which earned his motorcycle the nickname “Bobby Motorcycle“. The film had an amazing impact on both culture and fashion.
Babu defeats Bobby
In a strange turn of events ‘Bobby’ also got involved in politics. Babu Jagjivan Ram, who had broken ties with Indira Gandhi, used “Bobby” to divert attention during an important election rally at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi in 1977.
To deliberately divert the audience’s attention from the political incident, the film was telecast on Doordarshan. However, the plan failed, and the next day, a ridiculous headline appeared in the newspapers declaring, “Babu defeats Bobby.”
Thus, “Bobby” evolved into more than just a movie and a generational cultural phenomenon. It captured the nascent love sentiment, contributed to sustainable fashion, and even made a political presence.
As we celebrate 50 glorious years of “Bobby“, we can’t help but marvel at its enduring appeal, which continues to mesmerize audiences and influence fashion trends even today.
