Chole Bhathura holds a special place in the hearts of Delhiites. So I decided to go to Om Chole Bhathure Wala (Corner), which is a famous place on Delhi’s busy Deshbandugupta Road for food lovers.
I have been eating chole bhature here since childhood. Now if you ask the recipe of Chole Bhature, then tell me it is quite easy. Chole, which is cooked slow on heat with delicious gravy and chickpeas, aromatic spices like cumin, coriander, and turmeric. Bhature is a deep-fried, leavened bread made of refined flour, puffed up like a golden pillow, and tastes very soft in the mouth.
When you come here, you will see that the owner is busy handling his bundle of cash. And more than almost 10 of his employees are running away from here so that customers can easily get Chole Bhature.
If you come here in the afternoon or evening, you will have to wait for 10 to 30 minutes. But if you do not want to get stuck in the crowd, then you can order it from Swiggy or Zomato at home. Well, hot food would be more fun than anything else.
Here I got a full plate for just Rs 90. The bhature was medium-sized and thick, and the chole was mesmerising and well cooked. Pickles served with onions are also very tasty. Especially the “carrot pickle!” The bhature was fluffy and light, while the chickpeas were a perfect balance of spicy, salty, and slightly sweet.
But to get here it is important to know a few things:
- If you are coming by four-wheeler, then parking is the main problem. Deshbandhu Gupta Road (Karol Bagh) market is very crowded.
- The same counter serves as a cash counter as well as a cooking counter. Be prepared to stand in line and purchase tokens before receiving your food. The counter is always busy.
- There is no seating at this location. There are just normal tables for standing dining, so be prepared to dine standing. Sometimes you may need to share a table, and others may resort to eating outside in two-wheelers or even cars.
- Waiting time can bother you as it is crowded every day, especially on weekends.
As soon as you step inside you notice a few extra things:
- The cleanliness of the shop is a bit of an issue. Where people were standing and eating food, there was a tap of plain water nearby where they were washing their hands. This may be a bit unhealthy, but where do Delhiites care?
- The interior is very basic and white. The focus is clearly on the food, not the ambiance.
- Some people are roaming around wildly, cleaning the place. Even with the focus on food, an effort is made to keep things as clean as possible.
So, what made Om Chole Bhature Wala so famous?
- Generations of Expertise: People have been coming here for more than 50 years; perhaps people have developed an emotional connection with it because Chole Bhathure is building more restaurants, but what is the experience like here? now this brand.
- The sought-after area of Karol Bagh for real food lovers, it is also a plus point that one can try not only Chole Bhature but also various food items nearby like momos, soya chaap, and other non-vegetarian items like chicken, mutton, and fried fish.
- Perfect Balance: The dish struck a perfect balance between spicy, tangy, salty, and slightly sweet, catering to a variety of tastes.
- Affordable: Om Chole Bhature Wala offers exceptional taste at an incredibly affordable price, making it accessible to all.
How to reach here?
It is easy to reach here as public transport is very common in Delhi, but I would still advise you to come here by metro or auto. Coming here with your own car would not be a good idea. If you come by metro, then Karol Bagh, Paharganj, and Jhandewalan metros will be very close.
See, you will find Chole Bhature everywhere in Delhi, and even more so. So try it.
